Knives Out

Knives Out - 9.6/★★★★★

Whodunnits have always been a hit or miss for me, a lot of times they are either far too obvious or so far off that it makes zero sense in the long run. I believe that Knives Out goes right in the middle. While certain details about the who are revealed earlier on, there are many plot twists that subvert the viewer (in a good way and not a Game of Thrones way).

Benoit Blanc and Marta Cabrera portrayed by Daniel Craig and Ana De Armas

Aside from the plot, I would say that Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc and Ana De Armas’ Marta Cabrera are the real show stealers. Both characters have unique cadences to them that shake up the traditional whodunnit genre. With Marta puking anytime she is caught lying and Blanc’s patient demeanor claiming, “The truth will always arrive if you follow closely.” it forms an unusual bond between the two as they investigate the supposed suicide or Marta’s former employer and wealthy mystery novelist Harlan Thrombey. Another reason why I believe this film works so well is how the film acknowledges the media its based on. Throughout the film there are numerous plot devices seen throughout the mystery genre such as notes with invisible ink, secret windows, and incriminating evidence around every corner.

Marta Cabrera portrayed by Ana De Armas

Overall, Knives Out is a great film to throw on during a fall afternoon with a nice cup of tea. There is mystery, humor, and enough sweaters to make you want to throw one on yourself. I would also like to compliment Rian Johnson for his excellent direction, despite my minor hatred towards The Last Jedi, Knives Out is the perfect film for Johnson, and I am excited to see what he has in store next.
